Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)  

Who are we?

• The British Embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Political Officer to monitor, analyse and report on political developments in Azerbaijan and the wider region, build a network of political contacts to expand UK influence and support Embassy priorities, and represent HMG at public diplomacy events. 

Roles and Responsibilities

• Provide tailored analysis and recommendations on a broad range of foreign and domestic policy issues, including updates to seniors.
• Produce regular reports analysing domestic and regional trends and trajectories, including timely and high-quality updates on key political developments.
• Build and maintain a broad network of contacts across government, media, academia and civil society to broaden and deepen HMG’s understanding, reach and influence in Azerbaijan.
• Arrange meetings for HMA, DHM and high-level visitors with senior interlocutors, providing consecutive interpretation at meetings as necessary.
• As the Embassy’s Chevening Officer, lead the annual end-to-end recruitment process for the Chevening Programme, ensuring a strong strategically aligned cohort is selected. 
• Represent HMG at public diplomacy events. 

 Plus all reasonable duties as directed by Embassy management.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the UK-Azerbaijan bilateral relationship, develop expertise in political analysis and diplomacy, and work at the heart of the Embassy's engagement with Azerbaijan and the wider region.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience  

Our ideal candidate shows:

• English and Azerbaijani, both written and spoken, at a C1 level according to CEFR Framework *;    
• Degree completed or in progress (Master’s), preferably in International Relations, Political Science, or a related field
• Good knowledge of current affairs, international relations, regional affairs, public policy, or UK-Azerbaijan relations
• Good knowledge of Azerbaijani government and political structures and institutions    
• Confidence in using digital tools and platforms, including social media.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Curiosity and willingness to learn across a wide range of topics.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience  

Nice to have:

• Experience managing or contributing to social media accounts or digital campaigns 
• Experience organising events or coordinating activities 
• Experience using creative tools (e.g. Canva or similar)
• Good understanding of how to use AI tools (Microsoft Copilot) for research, writing, and productivity.

Other benefits and conditions of employment  

This is a full-time, permanent contract, 40 hours net per week. 

The salary is USD 2,529.89 gross per month and shall be paid in AZN monthly.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Azerbaijan is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service of the FCDO according to local labour legislation.
